Put the Brakes on Vehicle Fee Hike, Some Drivers Urge

Video will be available shortly.

The governor's proposal to raise vehicle title and registration fees hit a red light with some drivers. Some people feel it already costs them enough at the DMV. Others say it's better than a property tax hike.
"Ok, Mary I just need to see your driver's license, please"
Nearly everybody has to pay the price in time and in money for a license and registration.

Fifty-five dollars to register a car, $35 dollars to transfer its title.
Mary Williamson says that already costs her plenty.

"I think it's high enough, I do," she says.

But Gov. Jim Doyle would drive up the cost. The governor has suggested raising vehicle title and registration fees by $10 each.

Dewayne Washington from Madison says he can manage, but he thinks the costs already reach too high.
The DOT estimates a hike in fees would raise more than $30 million in additional revenue the first year.
Other drivers, like Mark Brunsell from Middleton, say they understand what's steering the governor's course of action.
"I think the fees are ok if it's going to help state deficit… as long as it's not going to raise property taxes," Brunsell says.
The governor pledged to close a $1.6 billion deficit without raising taxes. He also called for transferring $250 million from the transportation budget to fund education.
To break it down … Registering a car would climb from $55 to $65. Titles would climb from $35 to $45. And truck owners could pay more, depending on the truck.
