WI Public Television to Air "Postcards From Buster" Episode

Video will be available shortly.

PBS pulled the "Sugartime" episode of the Postcards From Buster cartoon series after some people objected to its content. The episode features a family with two moms.

"Hey, Buster!" is an animated show featuring an 8-year-old bunny named Buster that hops around the country. His search for adventure means traveling from the north pole to the south pole, and many places in between. And it also includes a lot of different people.

James Steinbach from Wisconsin Public Television says, "Buster goes and he learns about cheese and he learns about milking cows and learns about syrup. He learns about these kids."

But it's not the kids in this episode that caused a stir. It is their parents' lifestyle. The family has two moms.

The series airs on PBS and is funded in part by the Department of Education.

Steinbach says, "Two things happened. The Secretary of Education said this wasn't appropriate, and PBS, independently or not, decided also it wasn't appropriate. One of purposes of the program is to show diversity. I think that's a pretty good use of taxpayer money."

PBS pulled the episode, but the show's producer made it available to local stations. Wisconsin Public Television made the decision to air it outside of the cartoon's normal slot.

Steinbach says it will air at a time when more parents might be home, leaving the decision to watch up to parents. "Kids will see other kids doing stuff they do, but it's a parents' issue so we thought O.K. We respect that."

The episode airs on February 27th at 5:30 pm.
