Residents Are the Winners of Property Tax Freeze Battle
Assembly Republicans have decided not to vote on a proposed property tax freeze Tuesday. That's because a legislative fiscal bureau says Gov. Doyle's proposed freeze would benefit taxpayers more than the Republicans’ version of the freeze.
Gov. Doyle proposed his freeze in his budget address last week. The fiscal bureau says it would save the average taxpayer $3 on a $150,000 home.
In the study, the Republican plan would cost taxpayers an extra $34 in property taxes.
Republicans say the study is flawed because it's like comparing apples to oranges. The governor's freeze takes money from the transportation fund and medical malpractice fund to pay for the freeze.
Republican Rep. John Gard says, "We're going to pass a property tax freeze that is real. We're not going to steal money from all kinds of accounts to do it. He'll have to figure out where he stands after that."
A spokesman for Gard says they removed the freeze from the agenda for practical reasons and they will vote on it Thursday.
