More Students Coming to Madison Schools

Video will be available shortly.

If you're not happy with your child's current public school, you have one more week to do something about it.

For eight years now, Wisconsin law lets students attend a public school, other than the one in the district where they live. About 15,000 people statewide take advantage of the program. When it started, only 400 people were participating.

The program is open to Wisconsin residents from 5–year–old kindergarten to Grade 12. You can apply to a maximum of three different districts, but there are no guarantees your application will be accepted.

"A non–resident school district, the school you apply to, can deny you to attend there if there is lack of space, if they don't have a program, that's the primary reason. A resident district can deny you if they choose to take advantage of a limit that state law allows a district to stop them from losing a certain percentage of their population," says Bob Soldner of the Department of Public Instruction.

If you want to take advantage of the open enrollment, you have to apply by February 25th.

For more information or to get an application visit the Department of Public Instruction's website, check with your local district, or call 888–245–2732.

The Madison School District normally sees more students leaving the district than entering, but the 2004–2005 school year was pretty close to even.

One-hudnred and fifty-two students who lived in the district left for another school while 120 who lived outside the district enrolled in it.
