The two underground fires and power outages in downtown Madison have been traced to a contractor working at a substation.
The state contractor was working on UW-Madison equipment located at the East Campus Substation on Monday.
The work apparently caused too much electricity to be sent through underground cables, causing them to overheat, and spark the fires.
MG&E has repaired the substation near the Kohl Center and the electric system servicing downtown Madison.
MG&E and UW-Madison are reviewing the procedures used by the contractor.
