Property Tax Postponed

Video will be available shortly.

Republicans are holding off on sending their version of the property tax freeze to Governor Doyle. That's because they want him to rethink his decision to veto it.

Republican leaders are calling this a timeout on behalf of the taxpayers.
Their version of the freeze has been approved in both the Senate and the Assembly.

But Governor Doyle has said he will veto the bill once it arrives on his desk.

Assembly Speaker John Gard says they'll hold off for a while in order to give taxpayers a chance to contact the Governor and tell him to sign the freeze. "He promised people in the state, of the state that he'd support a property tax freeze. And we want people to understand what is at stake here, and hopefully weigh in and call the Governor's office and ask him to sign the property tax freeze."

Republicans say they'll probably hold off sending the bill until sometime next week. A spokesperson for Governor Doyle says instead of calling for a timeout Republicans should send the bill to the Governor so he can veto it.
