More to Madison...

The Capital City should be a rather happy host as more than 200,000 high school sports fans are expected to visit during the next four weekends of state tournaments.

But being in Madison means much more than meeting the mats.

Sandra Boersma has worked with prom fashions for a decade. She says tourney time, with its 25 percent sales increase, is a slam.

"When they come to Madison for the state tourneys, whatever they are, they always start looking for prom dresses."

Deb Archer, president of the Greater Madison Visitor and Convention Bureau, says the city should see a $16 million spending surge.

"They love to come to Madison. They can go to larger shopping areas, that they don't have in their rural communities, and so retail, really and food and beverage, end up being a huge sector of the spending area."

Judi Loken of Wisconsin Rapids says she's set to start her successful season at the Kohl Shopping Center.

"The Kohl's down here is really nice. They got the Abercrombies, they got the GAP; I think they gotta Pac Sun down here at one of the malls or else there's an outlet mall just a little bit outta town."

State Street ambassadors, eat your hearts out!

Sheila Loew explains, "We're checking it out so that we can have a son go to college down here."

And Archer suggests we natives play nice near our potential new neighbors.

"It's a beautiful city. We're really hoping to come down here and spend more time here."

Following this weekend's individual wrestling tournament, next week brings the team wrestling, followed by boys and girls hockey and basketball tournaments.
