Future of UW Two-Year Institutions Debated

The future of the UW's two-year campuses is up for debate.

The Higher Education committee heard about two rival plans for finding cost savings within the UW System Wednesday.

UW System President Kevin Reilly testified that consolidating some of the administration between the two–year campuses and the UW Extension Program is the best way to go right now. That plan would save $300,000.

Representative Rob Kreibich wants to start merging the two–year campuses with nearby four–year colleges. He says his plan could save $7 million.

Both sides say cost savings need to be found or the educational system will continue to suffer. Kreibich said, "I salute President Reilly for being open-minded about mine and forwarding one of his own. The more ideas to save money the better."

Representative Kreibich says the final decision will likely be included in the budget.
