State Lawmaker Wants to Limit Access to Some Cold Medicine

Video will be available shortly.

Is Wisconsin's Canadian drug program helping criminals who manufacture methamphetamine?

One state lawmaker says it is, and she's asking the Governor to plug the loophole.

An ingredient in cold medicine called psuedoephedrine is also a main ingredient in meth.

State lawmakers are working on legislation that would limit access to some cold medicine.

But Representative Kitty Rhoades says he called the Canadian drug buying program, and discovered it allows unlimited access to medicine with pseudoephedrine.

“And I asked if I could get Sudafed and she said sure do you want Sudafed or do you want to save a little more money and do the generic? Well how much could I get and she, how much do you want. Holy man, this is unlimited access to the primary ingredient of methamphetamine,” says Rep. Rhoades.

A spokesman for the Department of Health and Family Services says they're waiting for direction from the legislature on access to pseudoephedrine in Wisconsin stores before changing the rules on the Canadian drug program.
