Meningitis Suspected in 12 Year Old's Death

Bacterial meningitis is suspected of causing the death of a 12-year-old boy in Outagamie County.

State communicable disease epidemiologist Susann Ahrabi-Fard
says the boy died today at an unidentified hospital. The state has helped local health officials identify those who have had close contact with the boy and may be at risk. They won't disclose the child's hometown or school.

County public health manager Melody Bockenfeld says less than 30
people are at risk in this case. Ahrabi-Fard says there's no known connection with a confirmed case of meningitis at Concordia University in Mequon. The student lived on campus and was taken to Columbia St. Mary's Ozaukee Campus Friday after becoming ill a couple of days earlier.

Ahrabi-Fard says test results over the weekend confirmed it's a
case of bacterial meningitis. Wisconsin had 29 meningococcal meningitis cases last year with two fatalities, one adult and a 7 year-old child.
