Rev. Al Sharpton Speaks on UW Campus

Video will be available shortly.

A distinguished activist and former presidential candidate grabs the attention of Madison residents.

UW students and the general public filed into the Memorial Union Theater Monday night to hear Reverend Al Sharpton speak.

He talked about the 2004 election, the war in Iraq, and racial tensions in the United States, and also let the crowd ask questions.

When we sat down with Sharpton, he praised a hunger strike students organized Monday on the UW campus.

“I think we need to do a lot of grassroots organizing, and I think we need to do things like this hunger strike. I think that young people need to understand that you have got to expose problems to solve them. If you don't expose them no one will expose them for you,” says Rev. Sharpton.

Some UW students are using a hunger strike to draw attention to the high costs of college.

They want state lawmakers to rollback tuition 37.5 percent, the level it was two years ago.

They say if Governor Doyle's budget passes, then tuition will have gone up 56 percent in just four years.
