Proposed Law Would Make Farms Meet Air, Water Quality Standards

Video will be available shortly.

A state agency says it wants your help in the effort to keep the Wisconsin's agricultural economy green and growing.

The state's Department of Natural Resources is proposing a new livestock facility siting law, as the agricultural sector continues to modernize and expand its existing livestock operations.

The law seeks to protect the public's health and safety by establishing uniform siting standards, and helping livestock operations meet air and water quality standards, which would include monitoring odors produced by some farms.

But a DNR spokesperson says the department doesn't want to get too far in the process without gathering input from state residents.

"Agriculture is working with state and local government and with their communities to develop a growth–program for agriculture which respects the environment, and, at the same time, keeps our economy competitive and strong," says Dave Jelinski from Department of Agriculture.

Public hearings on the DNR's proposed Livestock Siting Rule are scheduled throughout the state during the next two weeks.
