Lawmakers Fight to Make "No Call" Stronger

(Madison) Not only are lawmakers fighting for the state's No Call list, they are working to make it even stronger.

Wednesday, Senator Jon Erpenbach announced plans to introduce legislation this session that would add cell phones to the state's No Call list and increase fines for violators.

However, the Wisconsin law is being challenged by a group of bankers. The Consumer Banker's Association wants companies and their affiliates to be able to contact consumers who have cancelled services for up to 18–months. Governor Doyle says, "These are banks that are trying to sell you credit cards that are going to be making these calls, that is what it is all about. And you weigh that against what has really happened in Wisconsin. I just want to emphasize this is a piece of legislation that really made a difference in the quality of peoples lives in this state.”

One-point-five million phone numbers are on the state's No Call list and that might be why Wisconsin residents are speaking up. The Federal Communications Commission has received more than 3000 comments and will continue to take comments until February 2nd. Then, they will decide if the No Call law will change.
