Archipelago Village Plans

One block of East Washington Avenue could look a lot different in a few years if proposals for a large commercial building become reality.

Even the model is huge. It's set up in a vacant building in the 900 block of East Washington so community leaders can get a real idea of what it would be like.

If its built, Archipelago Village would be 27 stories tall. That's about twice as tall as the State Capitol building.

Part of the debate is expected to center on whether rules against taller buildings within a mile of the Capitol should be waived for the project.

The developer, Curtis Brink says, “That’s a scrutiny level the state would have to agree to and the city council would have to agree to. That is something to show what could be a possibility here, whether everybody agrees with it has to be a very high hurdle for everybody to go to it.”

Brink says mass transit would be an important part of the 1.4 million square-foot building.

He also expects a lot of discussion about whether people want such a large building on East Washington. He expects at least a year of scrutiny and then five years for the building of the project.
