Even ten minutes of exercise can make a difference in your health.
That was the idea as several dozen people staged a walk around the capitol square Thursday.
It's an event sponsored by Fit City Madison designed to raise awareness about the importance of physical activity even in small increments.
Work sites throughout the city are being encouraged to allow employees ten minutes during the day to take a walk.
Not only is it good for you in terms of keeping the weight off a little bit, but it is a great way to relieve stress," says Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz. "I know in my job I try to make time for exercise everyday. And I'm probably successful 3 or 4 days a week. And it really makes a huge difference.
The government recommends 30 minutes of moderate activity in a day, but it doesn't have to be all at once. For example, 3 short, brisk walks might help lower the risk for cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.
