Registering Sex Offenders

Investigators say a registered sex offender, now charged with the murder and assault of a 9–year–old Florida girl, failed to notify officials after he left the state.

Wisconsin's sex offender registry program gives offenders ten days to change their address, school or place of employment. Anyone can access the online registry, but it's up to the state's 17,000 registered offenders to keep the information current.

“We do have some who move without telling us," says program supervisor Grace Roberts. "Once we find that out, then we do the paperwork and an investigation and send it to DA's for possible prosecution.”

Registered sex offenders who fail to comply could face a felony charge. The Department of Corrections publishes a booklet designed to educate people about sexual violence.
