Price to Smoke Could Cost Another Dollar

If you're a smoker, you may have to dig a little deeper in your wallet for that next pack of cigarettes.

Wednesday, a group of Wisconsin lawmakers introduced legislation to increase the cost of cigarettes by $1 per pack. The lawmakers say the main goal is to deter kids from smoking.

But Representative J.A. Hines says many adult smokers have told him they're all for the tax hike. "Nobody wants to continue to smoke.

What several people have said to me, they said, 'Doc, as soon as this goes into effect I have a reason to quit.'"

Hines also tells NBC15, the Governor pledged Wednesday that if the tax was significant and it was used to keep youngsters from starting to smoke, he's likely to sign it.

If this tax increase makes it into this year’s budget, the legislative fiscal bureau expects increased revenue of $641 million over the next two years.
