Proposed Bill Would Wipe Out Local Minimum Wages

Madison's increased minimum wage may be wiped out, if some state lawmakers have their way.

A bill approved in committee Thursday would pre–empt local ordinances that raise the minimum wage higher than $5.15 an hour.

Senate President Alan Lasee says if some places set minimums higher than others, businesses in places with a lower minimum wage would be hurt.

Madison raised its minimum wage to $5.70 an hour in January.

The Senate is expected to take up the bill on Tuesday.
