FOX LAKE, Wis. (AP) -- The Dodge County woman whose boyfriend convinced her to call 911 because she was driving drunk has second thoughts about turning herself in.

Pat Dykstra tells WTMJ-TV that she was driving home from the bar early Sunday because her boyfriend was too intoxicated. Dykstra says she doesn't know why she let him convince her to call 911. Now Dykstra has a $740 OWI ticket and a mark on her driving record.

Dykstra called 911 from her cell while driving, then hung up. She got a call back from sheriff's officials and told them her boyfriend thought she shouldn't be driving, then gave a description of her vehicle.

Authorities later found Dykstra at home in the Town of Fox Lake getting ready for bed. Deputies gave her a citation after she failed a sobriety test.

Dodge County Sheriff Todd Nehls says Dykstra did the right thing by calling them. Nehls says maybe a judge will think her call was commendable.

Original Story Posted Monday, January 28

At 12:20 a.m., Sunday morning, January 27, the Dodge County Sheriff’s Dept. received a 911 hang up from a cellular telephone. Dispatchers used reverse 911 and made contact will the cell phone owner, a 51-year-old female Dodge County resident.

The woman explained that her boyfriend made her call 911 because he thought “she was too drunk to drive”. She stated that she was currently driving and in the Fox Lake area and on her way home. At one point during the call she stated that she wanted to hang up because she does not like talking on her cell phone and driving at the same time.

The dispatchers asked her several questions. She was cooperative and even gave a description of the truck she was driving and where she was.

She stated she was driving because her boyfriend was too drunk to drive himself. Authorities responded to her home where she met them on the porch. She stated she “knew why they were there.”

Deputies spoke to her boyfriend, who stated he had a twelve pack or so to drink and stated, “I told her she was too drunk to drive, she just don’t listen.”

The female stated she had been drinking since 5:00 p.m. and had “about a six-pack.”

Authorities arrested the woman for OWI, 1st offense.

It was very clear that the 911 dispatcher was fishing for information to track down this driver. I think that the best solution would have been to ask the driver to pull over so they could finish the conversation without her being distracted from driving. This may have given enough time to get an officer on the scene.
