MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A 38-year-old Beloit man has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for his role in a conspiracy to distribute heroin.

A jury found Maurice Vaughn guilty of conspiracy after a three-day trial in federal court in Madison in January 2012. Police started investigating in the summer of 2010 after a number of heroin overdoses.

He was previously sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for drug trafficking. The judge in this case told him a significant sentence was necessary because the last one didn't seem to deter him when he got out.

Another man involved pleaded guilty to a heroin charge and was sentenced to five years in prison. A third man convicted for conspiracy to distribute heroin will be sentenced on April 9.
