DPI Orders Changes to Seclusion Room

The Department of Public Instruction says the Monroe School District must make changes to its special ed seclusion room.

After allegations of misuse from a parent, a DPI investigation found Abraham Lincoln Elementary school did not follow state guidelines when using the time–out room.

In a letter from the department to the district, officials write there were no written policies and not all staff were adequately informed.

Since the start of the investigation the district has removed the lock on the door, installed both a doorknob inside the room, and a motion sensor for the overhead light.

It plans to install an additional window to the door, review the cases of the six children who have been put in the room, keep detailed logs documenting its use, and review those regularly.

DPI maintains there are times when use of a seclusion room is permitted to maintain a safe school environment.
