Law of the Month: Absolute Sobriety

Print

April's Law of the Month shines a spotlight on sobriety.

With spring–fever ushering in prom and graduation season, state patrol officers want to remind drivers of Wisconsin's Absolute Sobriety Law.

It sets the legal blood alcohol limit for drivers under age 21 at 0.0. This means not a drop of alcohol can show up in the system of a driver who is under the state's legal drinking age.

Vicki Healey-Etten is a driving instructor. "What I try to stress to them is, if you can get into an accident completely sober, then having one or two drinks is not really gonna put you in any sort of advantage, it's just a disadvantage."

Penalties for violating the state's Absolute Sobriety Law include a mandatory 90–day driver's license suspension and a fine of more than $130.
