Madison Board Members Discuss Future of Leopold Elem.
A run down, overcrowded school continues to take center stage at Madison school board meetings. That was the case Monday night as members met to discuss the future of Leopold Elementary.
The 35 year old school has more than 600 students. And on May 24th, voters will decide if a second school will be built on the site.
Approving the referendum means accepting a $14.5 million price tag, but the new school would not be complete until 2007.
Monday night, board members met to discuss doubling up some classes to accommodate all of their students in the meantime.
"Apparently they think in the short range, although it certainly compresses art, music, takes away a computer class room, that the school could still handle the number of kids we expect between now and '07," says Ruth Robarts, school board member.
The board hopes to decide on a plan for the interim by the end of this month.
In May, they will meet to discuss a fall back plan in case the referendum for a new school fails.
