UPDATE: Cat Survives 300 Mile Trip Under Hood Of Car, Reunited With Owner

UPDATED Friday, April 20, 2012 --- 1:00 p.m.

From the Dane County Humane Society:

Leon’s owner, Matt, and his girlfriend traveled from the Twin Cities to Madison Thursday afternoon and were very excited to be reunited with their feline friend. Click on PHOTOS tab above for pictures. [As we reported last Friday, Leon traveled from the Twin Cities to Madison squashed beneath the hood of a car. A vacationing couple discovered Leon.]

They were so thankful that Leon was okay and were very appreciative of the care given to Leon while he was at Dane County Humane Society.

They reiterated how important it really is to make sure your animal is wearing a tag and is microchipped.

Had Leon not been wearing a tag or microchip, this special reunion might not have happened. DCHS wishes Leon and his family safe travels back to MN.

Before you put the key in your car's ignition you may want to pop the hood and check for stowaways. That's because a couple was heading from about the Webster, Minnesota area to the east coast for vacation. So they loaded up the car and hit the road. Their first pit stop was Tomah about 200 miles away. During their break they kept hearing something weird, meowing.

They didn't make another stop until Madison. The couple determined that the sound they were hearing was not coming from outside the vehicle. During a sweep of their car they checked underneath the hood and that's where they found little Leon.

The couple immediately broke out their cell phone and looked up the nearest animal shelter. That's how Leon ended up at the Dane County Humane Society. Amazingly he was not hurt.

Not only did Leon survive but he had current tags and a microchip implanted on his back. The DCHS has already contacted the owner and they're working on getting him back home.

DCHS spokesperson Gayle Viney says, " We do get in a lot of stray cats but the cats that come in to this shelter hardly ever have any form of identification. "

Next week is National pet ID week. The Dane County Humane Society will be offering reduced rates on tags and ID chips.

He is home safely with Matt and I. :) We were ecstatic to have him back! He rode with us in the front all the way home curled up on our laps <3

I bet that engine purred! Seriously, this could have been catastrophic for the feline and owner! I am glad everything worked out.

Leon is the kitty of Matt and I. I miss him SO much! None of our cats have ever ended up in the hood or even stayed there. Leon stayed in the car when my parents left for Carolina on Thursday and found him when they stopped in Wisconsin. Leon is being brought back to us here in Minnesota and we are extremely grateful! Leon is completely precious in every way possible. We just adopted him from the Golden Valley humane society a couple weeks ago. We miss him so much though! He is a miracle <3 I miss you Leon
