More than 20 people were evacuated from their homes and an area business Monday night after an anhydrous ammonia spill near the Varsity Club in Merrimac.
Sauk County authorities received the call around 9:30 p.m. Several units were dispatched to the scene.
According to eyewitnesses, the smell was terrible and Highways 78 and 113 were closed.
The spill reportedly happened at a nearby farm. The cause is not known.
Authorities say no one was seriously injured.
