Catholic churches across the state held prayer services for the new pope Tuesday.
The young faithful gathered at Saint Paul's University Center on State Street for a noon prayer service. Many students received word that Cardinal Radzinger was elected as pope while they were at the service.
Much of the congregation is optimistic about the future of the church.
Caroyln Averill, a UW junior, says, "The holy spirit definitely moves through this. Its not something anyone can plan. And I think everyone in their room felt it when his name was announced. You felt something greater and there's a lot greater at work than we could every imagine."
Jack Koczela is a UW sophomore. "I'm eager to see what his approach is to the youth and how he addresses them as the future of the church."
A church service will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. at St. James Parish in Madison. There Catholics will pray as a diocese for the new pope.
