A possible Department of Civil Rights in the city of Madison is moving forward, and is on its way to the common council.

Last year, Mayor Dave Cieslewicz put together a committee to look into combining the Affirmative Action Commission and the Equal Opportunities commission.

After listening to public input, the committee has laid out a plan to create the Department of Civil Rights and they hope it will be able to do more for the city than the individual departments alone.

Co-sponsor of the consolidation proposal Alderman Brian Benford says, “I think what's more important rather than a restructuring or creating a department is, as policy makers, we have to have the political will to say this is what we value for the city of Madison.”

The proposal will be forwarded to various city departments, before returning to the council for a vote.
