Mifflin Street Block Party Rescheduled

The city is giving in to UW students over when to hold the Mifflin Street block party.

After a meeting between the police chief and the mayor, they've agreed to hold the party on April 30, one week earlier than it’s traditionally held.

Every year the party attracts thousands of people to a two-block section of Mifflin Street. Police have been planning and scheduling officers for May 7 for months, but students argued the original date of May 7 came too close to finals, and they demanded it be held earlier.

Up until Thursday, the city had its heels dug in, saying changing the date now would be too expensive, but city officials have now agreed to change the date.

Mayor Dave Cieslewicz says, "Rather than having to fully staff two parties and deal with all those costs, we'll have to fully staff one party. There will be some additional costs compared to a simple event on May 7th, which is what we had hoped for, what we tried to work for, but we decided to make an accommodation to reality."

April 30 will be a busy day since that's when the Crazylegs run is also held.
