Task Force Wants to Record Suspect Interrogations

Video will be available shortly.

Police could get the tools to record suspect interrogations under new legislation being considered.

The proposal creates a grant program to pay for equipment to use in recording suspects in felony cases. Members of the Avery Task Force met Tuesday morning to consider it.

The task force is named for Steve Avery and includes a number of legislators and law enforcement representatives. Avery was wrongly convicted, then set free after nearly 20 years in prison.

Rep. Mark Gundrum says, "Certainly with something as important as law enforcement, where somebody's freedom [is] on line, we have technology, the cost coming down we should begin to utilize that for these purposes."

A UW Law professor and co-director of the Wisconsin Innocence project also is on the panel. The project is involved in the retrial of a former police officer charged with murder.

The task force will meet again next month and the bill could be introduced this fall.
