Mayor Cieslewicz's Vision for Madison

The future of Madison will include more swimming pools, more parks and streetcars downtown if Mayor Dave Cieslewicz gets his way.

The Mayor introduced his 10-year plan Wednesday in a presentation called "Imagine Madison."

The Mayor says the city needs to increase the number of affordable housing units and add streetcars to ease traffic congestion. He says the city should build two more public swimming pools, a new central library, and 15 more neighborhood parks.

Cieslewicz says the city needs a plan to make sure that growth doesn't ruin the things that make Madison special. "Here's the catch. Our quality of life is based in part on our manageable size. But our manageable size in turn attracts more people, which could damage the quality of life that makes people want to come here in the first place."

Madison's 150th anniversary is next year, and Cieslewicz says he wants to get more public input in the next year to put together a 10-year plan.
