Tuesday Morning Wisconsin News Headlines

Posted Tuesday, May 22, 2012 --- 6:35 a.m.

Here is the latest Wisconsin news from The Associated Press:

ASHWAUBENON, Wis. (AP) -- A 35-year-old Ashwaubenon police officer was fired after he was accused of handcuffing his wife during an argument. Thomas Benike is facing false imprisonment and disorderly conduct charges in Brown County for last October's dispute. He'd been suspended but continued to draw his $71,000 annual salary.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- New data shows that Wisconsin's real estate market continues to rebound. Figures from the Wisconsin Realtors Association show sales of existing homes rose 19 1/2 percent in April. That's the 10th consecutive month of double-digit sales growth.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Federal officials are reminding campers in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest to use local firewood to make sure a tree-eating beetle doesn't spread. The emerald ash borer travels in infested firewood or nursery stock that's transported from one location to another.

BARABOO, Wis. (AP) -- The International Crane Foundation in Baraboo is streaming live video of newly hatched whooping cranes. Crane Chick Cam shows the young birds being kept warm under heat lamps. As they get older they'll have access to outdoor runs where they can strengthen their muscles. The massive birds were nearly extinct 70 years ago, but there are now about 550 of them.
