Charges Dropped Against Man Serving Life Term

A former police officer convicted of strangling his ex–girlfriend has charges dismissed Friday during his second trial..

Evan Zimmerman bowed his head and wept after a Dodge Conty judge approved a motion dismissing the homicide charge. This after he already served nearly 4 years of a life sentence.

Zimmerman's second trial began Monday, but today the Eau Claire County D.A. moved for dismissal, deciding he couldn't get another conviction.

Zimmerman's appeal was brought by the Wisconsin Innocence Project at the UW Madison Law School. The group has worked on the case for three years.

“If you become a lawyer because you believe in the constitution, and you believe in protecting people's rights there can be nothing more sacred then what have helped Evan accomplish here, to clean his name, to clear his name,” says attorney Keith Belzer12:58

The Wisconsin Innocence Project tries to eonerate people it believes have been wrongly convicted. It was also successful in the cases of Steven Avery and Maurice Carier, as well as Christopher Ochoa.
