Governor Jim Doyle has signed a bill into law making it easier to track juvenile sex offenders once they become adults.
The governor signed “Aimee's Law” Monday at the Waukesha Teen Center. The bill is named after Amie Zyla, who was assaulted when she was eight years old by Joshua Wade, who was 14 at the time.
Wade is now 23, and facing several counts of sexual assault of a child and child enticement.
Under the old rules, his juvenile offenses couldn't be released once he became an adult. Now, police can release that information if they think the public's safety may be at risk.
"It provides some needed protections for young people in our communities by giving their parents and others the kind of information that they need in order to protect them and take the steps necessary to protect their children," Doyle said during the signing ceremony.
Amie Zyla and her family worked hard for passage of the bill after she saw coverage of Wade's latest charges.
