Members of the Rock County board will consider doing away with the office of coroner, in place of a medical examiner's position.
The move comes after Rock County's former coroner resigned. Karen Gilbertson pleaded no contest to misconduct in public office.
A coroner is elected. A medical examiner is appointed by the county administrator.
Adam Peer, chair of the Public Safety and Justice Committee says switching positions could take the politics out of the position. "I think we ought to have standards and qualifications and I think the board and the administrator ought to have the ability to oversee this office in a way that we just can't right now."
Larry Wiedenfeld is another Rock County Supervisor. "I have great confidence Rock County with more than 150,000 people can find one man, one woman who can do job excellently."
One county supervisor says the Governor will choose from a pool of five candidates for coroner within the next week.
