Marquette University hopes its new nickname is as good as "gold", but some students just have the blues.
Wednesday, the Marquette Board of Trustees announced that the university will not return to its old Warriors nickname. Instead, it will take on a new name -- Marquette Gold. That replaces the Golden Eagles.
Some alumni have pushed for years to restore the Warriors nickname that was in place from 1954 through 1993.
But university officials say we now live in a different era. "We cannot teach one principle about respect for human dignity in our classrooms, and then fail to act by the same principle when making decisions," says Father Robert Wild, Marquette President.
Some students weren't thrilled about the decision, and took their protest around campus.
The change will be effective July first. That's also when the university leaves Conference U.S.A. and joins the Big East Conference.
A new mascot is expected to be announced at the start of the new school year in the fall.
