Public Plays Plea to Madison School Board

The hearing was chock full of students, teachers and parents concerned their pet programs might get cut if the May 24 referendum doesn't pass.

One group played a special song to board members, "Don't jam us in music, keep me in school... my special classes motivate me to reach for the fruit of the learning tree."

They played their plea to the board Wednesday night not to overcrowd special classes, like music, gym, art and computer classes.

Even the audience joined in.

It was the start of a slew of performances aimed at tugging on the heart strings.

Four students sing another song, "You are my classroom, my only classroom..."

About 85 people attended the second of two public hearings, making emotional appeals to the board.

Some lobbied for open classrooms, which are classrooms that combine two grades under the same teacher for two years.

No matter what program or position, the theme was the same: if you make cuts, you'll hurt the students, whom you are supposed to serve.

Board members received the district's final budget recommendation Tuesday night.

District officials say they should have the completed school budget profile next week.
