Forest Fire Burns Thousands of Acres in Adams County

Video will be available shortly.

About a hundred people are out of their homes, as a massive forest fire continues to burn in Adams County.

About 250 firefighters from 18 area departments responded to an area near Big Flats just before two Thursday afternoon.

The fire spread quickly, ripping through roughly 3,900 acres and destroying several buildings along the way.

The Red Cross has set up a shelter at a local school.

The fire is about 50 percent contained, but crews will be working through the night.

Firefighters say Thursday's dry, windy conditions hindered their efforts to contain the blaze.

"The weather is really working against us today. We have got a good stiff wind that's blowing from the southwest, pushing this fire to the northeast. It's a nice hot, sunny day. Probably one of the warmest that we've had for a while. And the relative humidities are quite low today, which are just helping this monster keep going and going. Making it more difficult for suppression," says Jennifer Rabuck from the Cottonville Fire Department.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation, but officials do suspect it was started by a fire that got out of control on private land.
