Mifflin Street Quiet on Traditional Day of Partying

Today (Saturday) provides a marked contrast to the scene on Madison's Mifflin Street just one week ago.

It appears as though students are keeping up their end of a deal with the city and police.

With the first round of final exams beginning Sunday for many students, all was quiet this Saturday on the 500-block of Mifflin.

But heading into today, Madison police weren't sure what would happen. Officer Carl Gloede says, "We weren't sure what to expect. We had heard through the weeks in planning this of the different activities that may take place on either of the weekends, so we planned for an event today. It didn't come to fruition so we were able to let people go and go back about our normal business."

An estimated 20,000 people showed up to the annual block party last week.

Traditionally, the Mifflin Block Party takes place the first Saturday in May.
But students pushed to move the event up to last week because of exams. The city and police finally agreed to the earlier date, despite the added cost.
