UPDATE: Fire On E. Washington Ave. In Madison

UPDATED Wednesday, May 30, 2012 --- 12:40 p.m.

From the City of Madison Fire Department:

City of Madison fire investigators believe a fire at 1913 E. Washington yesterday afternoon started in the kitchen, but was not the result of a cooking fire.

The fire was called in just after 4 p.m. by neighbors who saw smoke coming from the side windows.

Engine Company 3 was first on scene and extinguished the fire within minutes of their arrival.

The fire was contained to the second-floor apartment at the rear of the building.

Outbound East Washington was closed for approximately 45 minutes while firefighters worked to ensure the fire was out, and that there was no extension.

No one was in the upstairs apartment at the time of the fire, but neighbors downstairs heard smoke alarms go off and were alerted to leave the building. There were no injuries.

The exact cause of the fire is undetermined.

Engine Company 3 was first on scene and extinguished the fire within minutes of their arrival.

The fire was contained to the second-floor apartment at the rear of the building.

Outbound East Washington was closed for approximately 45 minutes while firefighters worked to ensure the fire was out, and that there was no extension.

East Washington is expected to reopen by 5 p.m.

No one was home at the time of the fire, and there were no injuries.

A fire investigator has arrived at the scene. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.

    Let's get some facts straight. I called in the report, there was someone home, the downstairs neighbor. I also banged on the door and made sure no one was inside.
