Someday you may be able to hop a street car in Sun Prairie and ride it to your job in Madison.
A Streetcar Study says it would be possible for streetcars to run beyond the downtown and bring in people from neighboring cities. That would put the streetcars in direct competition with Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk's proposal of building a light commuter rail to connect the downtown to Middleton and Sun Prairie.
The streetcar committee was created by Mayor Dave Cieslewicz to look at preliminary questions like where the cars would run, what technology is needed, and how much the project would cost.
"Whether going out to our neighboring communities ends up being in the final is something to be determined," says mayor's spokesman George Twigg. "But they're there to brainstorm and get input from the community and look at as many options as possible."
Dane County Executive Falk says she thinks a commuter rail line is a better idea and should be built before streetcars are purchased.
