Madison's first pool is getting more and more expensive, and taxpayers will be picking up the extra costs.
The lowest bid for construction of the pool was a half million dollars over the expected cost. The Mayor will ask the city to authorize another $700,000 in borrowing to cover the extra costs.
The pool was expected to cost $4.1 million, but the lowest bid came in at $4.6 million, and total costs could rise even higher than that.
A spokesman for the mayor says the city will find the money in this year's budget by pushing off some other projects until next year.
"The bottom line is we will require some more taxpayer investment to build the pool," says mayor's spokesman George Twigg. "But the mayor thinks it's a worthy project and something we should go forward with."
The city has to break ground on construction of the pool by July 1st,
Or it will not receive the nearly $3 million donation from the Goodman brothers that fueled the project.
