Planning for the Future

The city of Madison has finished its comprehensive plan for development, and now city leaders want your input.

City leaders refer to a map when talking about a broad overview of how Madison should develop over the next 20 years It's just part of the city's smart growth plan.

The plan will encourage new urbanist ideas for housing developments with smaller lots and more community areas. The planners say they have identified where Madison should focus on re–development and adding transit options to an area.

The principal planner says the plan is designed to be flexible...
So if Madison decides on light rail or streetcars the plan can adjust.

"We might refine some of those recommendations and shift them over to those corridors. Right now they're kinda generic. If there's a light rail line here, you probably don't want to redevelop here, but here. But we don't know where it would be if it happens," says Michael Waidelich, Principal Planner.

The full plan will be released to the public this Thursday night.
There will also be a series of community meetings.
