Madison Voters Split on Referenda

Video will be available shortly.

The Madison Metropolitian School District asked voters three questions
Tuesday. Voters responded with a resounding "no" to two of them.

Voters turned down requested money to build a new school on the Leopold site.

They also said no to a measure to exceed the revenue cap by $7.4 million. That money would have been used for general operating expenses.

Voters did approve a third question, continuing funding for maintenance and technology updates.

Question one failed with 53% of voters saying no. The measure failed by nearly 3,000 votes. Question two was defeated by more than 5,100 votes, with 56% of voters saying no. And the third question passed by nearly 2,800 votes, or 53%.

Madison Superintendent of School Art Rainwater says the people of
Madison have voted for what they believe is in the best interest of
students in the district but Rainwater says things will change
due to the reduced funding the district now faces.

The school board had already approved a list of school cuts in the event the operating referendum failed.
