The 440th Airlift Wing at General Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee is on the list of the Pentagon's 150 recommended base closings.
Fort McCoy is not on the closure list, although the Pentagon
recommends it be realigned which will mean a possible loss in military positions but a net gain of 51 civilian jobs.
Truax Field in Madison is also not on the list. In fact there could be an increase of military and civilian positions at the Dane County Airport facility.
The 440th Airlift Wing is the only facility among Wisconsin five
major installations recommended for closure. According to the
Pentagon's Base Realignment and Closure Commission list, closing
the 440th Airlift Wing in Milwaukee County would mean a net loss of
266 military and civilian jobs.
The Pentagon is recommending that some smaller
facilities be closed, including the Navy-Marine Corps reserve Center in Madison as well as the Olson U.S. Army Reserve Center in Madison
