Madison's Mayor hopes some new "bees" will make area waters a little sweeter for visitors.

This week, three of the city's new SolarBees made their way out into Monona Bay.

The SolarBees mark the city's latest effort to clean up its waterways. The floating, solar powered water circulators are designed to help prevent the growth of hazardous blue-green algae.

Three more SolarBees are scheduled for installation later this summer. It's part of a free trial program, which allows the city to test the devices through November.

Mayor Dave Cieslewicz says, "If these devices work, that's tremendously good news and we can try them out in other parts of other lakes in future seasons. If they don't work, it didn't cost us anything and we'll continue doing what we're doing."

A total of six SolarBees will eventually be in place in Monona Bay. City engineers will monitor the bees weekly to determine their effectiveness.
