Sun Prairie: American Legion Post 333 in Sun Prairie has been celebrating Memorial Day since 1921.

This year's ceremony may have been the most emotional ever, because the newest member to this honor roll was added just this week.

"This morning we have another soldier from our community that has given his life for our country. His name is Joshua Scott. Chief Warrant Officer Scott was killed in action on Friday," read Post Chairman Mike Rohan.

Joshua Scott's helicopter was shot down over central Iraq Thursday.

His mother Catherine bravely decided to attend the ceremony. "Because it was Sun Prairie, because it was what Josh believed, I wanted to be here for it."

The red poppy represents a fallen soldier. Catherine laid her red poppy in front of the folded flag in honor of her son. "Today I could actually feel that poppy as a real symbol."

Joshua Scott leaves behind his wife Sherri and three children. His son Kross was only a month old when Joshua left for Iraq.

Catherine was later presented with the gold star, given to the family members of those killed in action. She says it will be hard to hang it up, because her mother was about to order a blue star banner hung by families with soldiers in combat.

"She went and called for a blue star and found out we had to have a gold star instead. So that was hard."
