Alzheimer's Research Money

Governor Doyle was happy with a Joint Finance decision to allocate $2.5 million for Alzheimer's Research at the University of Wisconsin.

The money will be used to create a research lab on campus. Eventually the lab will create drugs that could prevent or halt the progression of the disease.

Scientists hope to create a detailed list of Alzheimer's patients in the state and then create a brain bank where Alzheimer's patients will donate their brains to science after their death.

The donations will lead to more comprehensive research, which will lead to breakthrough drugs and more clinical trials and studies.

Alzheimer's Researcher Dr. Jeff Johnson says, " Wisconsin drugs developed in Wisconsin, used in preliminary trials in Wisconsin for patients that have Alzheimer's in Wisconsin."

Dr. Johnson says the $2.5 million investment will eventually lead to millions more in the form of federal research grants. 100,000 people in the state have Alzheimer's Disease.
