GM Announces Major Cuts

Video will be available shortly.

General Motors plans to make some big cuts to its workforce, and the company's Janesville plant could be affected.

The move is designed to save the company more than two-billion dollars a year.

GM's CEO announced Tuesday the company will eliminate 25,000 jobs or more over the next three years and close several plants around the country.

Company officials say they've had to add $1,500 to the price of every vehicle to pay for health care expenses.

The G-M plant in Janesville makes about 12-hundred trucks and S-U-V's a day.

Both Governor Jim Doyle and representatives from the plant say they expect that production to continue.

The communication manager from the plant in Janesville had this to say about the announcement ini a statement released Tuesday afternoon. "We're just focusing on the great news we have. We just had a $175 million investment into our plant to prepare for future production, and that's what we're focusing on."

Commerce Secretary Mary Burke tells NBC 15 News she's hopeful that General Motors will keep the Janesville plant open.
