La Valle Village President Dies After Construction Accident

La Valle Village President Duane Nobs has died after being exposed to gases at a construction site.

The 56-year-old and his 44-year-old co-worker, Todd LaBansky, were found unconscious Friday morning in a Reedsburg manhole.

They both work for B-and-L Excavating of La Valle. LaBansky is listed in critical condition at University Hospital in Madison.

Sauk County Coroner Betty Hinze says Nobs died Sunday due to exposure to toxic gases. But it will take several weeks to analyze soil and air to determine what kind of gases.

But Hinze says the gas was from the soil or some other natural process, not natural gas from a utility pipeline.

La Valle Trustee Linda Champagne says Nobs had been village president for at least nine years.
