Madison's Hilldale Shopping Center is getting a make–over.

Mayor Dave Cieslewicz was on hand Wednesday for the groundbreaking ceremony.

The project's developers say the new Hilldale will offer a "urban downtown" feel with a variety of stores, restaurants, cafes and condominiums, along with structured parking.

"This is the trend of the future, mixing housing and retail with structured parking with a little green space, a little more attention to design," says mayor Dave Cieslewicz.

Construction is already under way in the parking lot area between Marshall Field's and the University Bookstore.

The project should be completed by early 2006.

And there's no need to worry if you plan on shopping there, none of the stores plan on closing during reconstruction.
